A Victorian terrace property in Bristol received a full deep retrofit, extension and renovation, bringing it from an EPC rating D to a B, with A achievable through the future inclusion of solar panels.
The south facing kitchen dining space was extended and transformed through the addition of a 3M strip roof light and additional opening rooflights for natural ventilation. Walls were removed to allow the kitchen to flow through to an open plan dining room overlooking the garden. Full width doors fold back to open the end of the house, creating al fresco dining in the summer. Cosy scenes are shown looking back at dusk, framed by anthracite aluminium doors and orange rough cast render.
The addition of one roof light over the stairs completely transformed the entrance experience of this home. Light now floods down into the depths of the hallway which is traditionally a dark constricted space. An archway was formed to introduce a contemporary profile and frame views up the stairs.
This project is featured as a case study on the Retrofit West platform. Click here to read how the property was transformed by hand from a neglected, dark time-piece into an open plan light-filled, highly insulated family home, fit for 21C living. This project demonstrates how a period property with sensitive features and numerous design constraints can be retrofitted internally without compromising on space and quality or affecting the beautiful stonework exterior.
